Eagles Drop Two to RedHawks

Eagles Drop Two to RedHawks

On a windy day in Prescott, Embry-Riddle dropped both games of their double header to the RedHawks of Benedictine Mesa by scores of 8-4 and 19-14.

Game 1

After BenU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, ERAU answered right back in the bottom as Travis Strickler (Glendale, Ariz.) led off with a single.  Strickler then scored on a double by Javier Izaguirre Jr. (Riverside, Calif.) and the game was tied 1-1.

The RedHawks retook the lead 2-1 in the top of the 3rd, but Strickler hit a solo homerun to tie the game at 2-2.

In the top of the 6th inning, Benedictine Mesa went back on top 3-2.  Once again the pair of Strickler and Izaguirre Jr. answered for the Eagles.  Much like the first inning, Strickler reached first and scored on another double by Izaguirre Jr and the teams were tied again 3-3.

The RedHawks hit another homerun in the top of the 8th inning, but this time for Embry-Riddle it was Kevin Fedoruk (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) with a solo shot to tie the score at 4-4.

Unfortunately for ERAU, Benedictine scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning and the Eagles didn't have an answer in the bottom half of the inning as they lost 8-4.

Game 2

The second game of the double header was a much higher scoring affair than the morning game.

Benedictine Mesa scored right away in the top half of the first inning as they went up 2-0.  Strickler hit his second homerun of the day in the bottom half to cut the lead to one run and after one inning, the Eagles trailed 2-1.

In the second inning, the RedHawks added one run to their lead as they were up 3-1 when ERAU came up to bat.  Calvin Solie (Buckeye, Ariz.) hit a solo homerun to left field to make the score 3-2.  Miles Murphy (Goodyear, Ariz.) then hit a single and scored as Strickler reached on an error.  Strickler then stole second base and third base and scored on a wild pitch.  After two innings, Embry-Riddle led 4-3.

The lead didn't last long for ERAU as BenU added four runs in the top of the 3rd, two more in the 4th, and another in the 5th to lead 10-4.  The bottom of the 5th inning was huge for the Eagles as they scored 8 runs on five hits.  Drew Barragan (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) walked to start the inning and then Fedoruk hit a single.  Jacob Aguirre (La Verne, Calif.) followed with a single to load up the bases for Roberto Garza Nunez (Salinas, Calif.).  Garza Nunez was walked which brought in Barragan.  A sac fly by Owen Cain (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) plated Fedoruk and made the score 10-6.  Aguirre came around to score as Solie reached on a fielder's choice.  Murphy's second single of the game brought home Solie and brought ERAU within two runs with the score 10-8.  Izaguirre hit a single and then Barragan followed with a three run homerun as Embry-Riddle led 12-10 after five innings of play.

The RedHawks answered with three runs in the top of the 6th inning and retook the lead 13-12, but once again the Eagles answered as they tied the score at 13-13.  Murphy picked up an RBI as he knocked in Aguirre with a groundout to the right side of the field.

After holding Benedictine Mesa scoreless for two innings, Embry-Riddle scored one run in the bottom of the 8th as Murphy hit a double and scored on a single by Izaguirre Jr.

Once again the RedHawks answered though as they scored six runs in the top of the 9th and won the ball game 19-14.

Embry-Riddle will be on the road next week as the Eagles head to Phoenix to play Park-Gilbert in a three game series.
